Ingredients

  • 2 ahi tuna steaks (about 6 oz each)
  • 2 tablespoons sesame oil (or olive oil)
  • ¼ cup sesame seeds (white or a mix of black and white)
  • 1 teaspoon soy sauce (or tamari for gluten-free)
  • 1 teaspoon grated fresh ginger
  • 1 teaspoon garlic powder
  • ½ teaspoon salt
  • ¼ teaspoon black pepper
  • Optional garnish: Sliced green onions, lime wedges, or wasabi

Instructions

  • Prepare the Tuna: Pat the ahi tuna steaks dry with paper towels. Lightly coat them with soy sauce, then season with garlic powder, salt, and pepper.
  • Coat with Sesame Seeds: Spread sesame seeds on a plate. Press each side of the tuna steaks into the sesame seeds to create an even coating.
  • Heat the Pan: Heat sesame oil in a large skillet or cast-iron pan over medium-high heat until shimmering.
  • Sear the Tuna: Place the tuna steaks in the hot pan. Sear for 1-2 minutes on each side for rare, or longer if you prefer more doneness. Be careful not to overcook, as ahi tuna is best served rare or medium-rare.
  • Rest and Slice: Remove the tuna from the pan and let it rest for 2 minutes. Slice into thin pieces for serving.
  • Serve: Arrange the seared tuna slices on a plate. Garnish with green onions, lime wedges, or wasabi, and enjoy with a side of soy sauce or your favorite dipping sauce.
